The collection consists of letters (including 23 letter books), 3 photographs, and 2 scrapbooks related to the life and business activities of Jackson A. Graves. Subject matter includes banking and finance, and many of the business correspondence in the collection is with Isaias W. Hellman (1842-1920), president of the Farmers and Merchants Bank in Los Angeles from 1875-1920 and president of Wells Fargo Nevada National Bank in San Francisco from 1890-1920. The collection also contains land papers of the Los Angeles area (including materials related to Rancho San Pasqual) and papers of California law firms.

Jackson A. Graves (1852-1933), Los Angeles lawyer and businessman, came to California in 1857. He graduated from St. Mary's College in San Francisco in 1872 and studied law in the firm of Eastman and Neumann. Graves moved to Los Angeles in 1875. In 1888, after membership in various partnerships, Graves joined Henry O'Melveny, and the firm became Graves, O'Melveny and Shankland until its dissolution in 1904.
